Journey with us to celebrate FREEDOM DAY in Freetown, where on March 11, 1792, approximately 1,196 formerly enslaved Africans, who had endured enslavement in the US, migration to Nova Scotia, and a two-month-long journey back to Sierra Leone, gathered beneath the historic Cotton Tree and held a thanksgiving service, establishing Freetown as a community grounded in freedom and self-determination. 

 

This is not your average tour of Sierra Leone—it’s a transformative, soul-stirring homecoming that weaves together history, healing, and hope with every step. Centered around Freedom Day, the Heritage and Legacy Tour invites you to walk in the footsteps of our ancestors on Bunce Island, where oral historians share stories of resilience and resistance.  It presents a unique opportunity to address the challenges faced by many communities worldwide.  You will visit Tasso Island, a community of 5,500 residents where SierrAfrica Diaspora Connect is working to improve access to electricity, clean water, sanitation, and internet. During your visit, you will play a vital role in shaping the future of Tasso Island.   This tour is a journey with a purpose! Every tour is tailored to provide you with the best experience and to help fund projects that bring light, clean water, and educational and economic opportunity to historic Tasso Island.

Building on the legacy of return and institution-building, the Business & Culture Exchange invites members of the diaspora to participate as partners and owners in Sierra Leone’s economic future.  During this tour, we will also capture endangered oral histories and archive them for museums and future generations.
